Pipe symbol not working in spacing metrics

Hi,
I’m trying to use the RHS metrics of k for the LHS of x, using the pipe symbol:

spacing metrics, left to right:
k: l,k
x: |k, k

But it isn’t working, metrics on the left stays what it was previously, value displayed in (parenthesis), like |k(321). Help!

You need to type an equal sign before that, like this: =|k
