Question about changing components individually

Hi Glyphs community,

We are currently working on a variable font called Glurb. With the axis sliders, we can adjust the weight, interpolation and shape.

This all works as expected, but we want to take it further. To get a more ‘organic’ form, we want the shapes to blend into each other more (Photo: Shape Form we want to have, now done in Illustrator to show).

We know that we can adjust each component individually, but we are wondering if there are more possibilities than just scaling or moving them.

When we decompose a component, we are able to edit it, but the interpolation no longer works after that.

So our question is: is there a way to edit a component individually beyond scaling or moving it?

We also attached a few more screenshots to show how the typeface is currently connected.

We look forward to hearing from you, and please let us know if any more information is needed.

Thanks in advance!

I don’t think that this is possible, at least not by only using components. That’s a limitation of the OpenType file format.

You can decompose the components and try to mimic the effect by manually drawing all the smooth connections between shapes. That is a lot of work and requires the components to be decomposed on all layers.
