Question : Variable Font doesn’t work in AI

Hello. I am writing to ask about Variable Font.

I trying to make a Japanese Kana variable font.
Axes sets Weight only.
Both Master and Instance set Regular and Bold.
Although there were no problems at axis-praxis,
but it doesn’t work when I try it with Illustrator.(Including other Adobe product)
When outputting with an Opentype instead of a Variable font,
Regular and Bold are output respectively, it can be selected and used.

Could you give me some advice?

Glyphs Ver.2.5.2 (1150) / Adobe Illustrator 22.1

AI’s implementation is not perfect. But can you send me the .glyphs file please to support (at) (this website without www). I will have a look.

Dear mekkablue,

Thanks for your reply. I emailed you.
I want to test with a long sentence, so I use AI.
I’m stumped…

This is a bug in Illustrator. If a glyph has a lot nodes but only very few have variation all variations are ignored. Move the outlines by one unit in one master and it will work.
