I have quite a simple font with a 5px overshoot on rounded letter forms. I want to make this align to the other glyphs when the type gets down below 12px in size so it works well as a pixel font because of windows machines.
I’ve looked into auto-hinting, but this does not seem to be working. Any help would be appreciated.
Can you show screenshots of the overshoot? From Glyphs and from where the font is used?
What font format do you use?
TrueType
Can you try to increase the overshot zones in the master settings by one or two units and export as OTF (CFF) and see how that looks.
If that doesn’t work, you might need to do manual TrueType hinting.
TrueType hinting I’m guessing is complicated? I will try and increase the overshoot zones first.
It is not really complicated, a bit tedious maybe.
From what app/OS is your screenshot? On most macOS apps, hinting is not used, so changing the aligment zones won’t help there.
Are there any tutorials on Truetype hinting?
The screenshot is from a windows machine I’ve been testing on.
Double check the path directions in that glyph.
So I added manual hinting and that all looked good and exported with auto hinting off but I’m still getting some jumping wondering if I missed something? Thanks for all your help.
Can you show the hints of the A and the S?
Don’t ad so many aligns. Only add one stem from one top node to one below. All other nodes will be handled automatically. And always make the zones one or two units bigger.
Use 6 or 7 in the size column.
And don’t use an align and specially not a one that is rounded up.
