Smooth migration from the `ital` to `slnt` axis

Initially, I implemented obliques in my font using the ital axis. Since Figma provides limited support for the ital axis, I’m considering switching to the slnt axis. My typeface includes intermediate layers/masters for some glyphs along with alternate .italic glyphs and relevant substitution features.

Is there a way to smoothly migrate from ital to slnt?

The last time I migrated (backwards, from slnt to ital), I ended up losing all my intermediate masters, which is why I’m a bit worrying

P. S. Additional question: are there any known issues with design software supporting the slnt axis?

Make a backup before a major change like that.

It might be the easiest to do that in the .glyphs file by search replace the axis tags.
