Style linking in TTF variable font

Hi there,
I have some issues with style-linking in a 1 axis variable font family.
— I have 2 distinct .glyphs files, one for the uprights and the other for the italics.
— Five weights: ExtraLight, Light, Medium, Bold, Black (no Regular, could it be the problem?)
— both files share the same family name, and instances are linked (Medium > Medium Italic, etc.)
When I export a variable font, I have 2 issues:
— I can’t choose a name for the .TTF file, so I have to rename the upright before exporting the italic (if not, the file is overwritten with the same name)
— Italics weights do not show in Adobe Illustrator. It’s ok when only one is installed (italics or uprights), but when I install both, only uprights appear.

I tried to define a Italic Axis (0,1),
or to declare a STAT entry, but it doesn’t work.

Thanks for your help!
Thomas

Can you send me the .glyphs file please to support (at) (this website without www). I will have a look.

I see, this is pretty annoying. I’ll file a bug report.

The one that comes first in the alphabet appears, the other does not load. I do not know yet if this is a bug in AI’s implementation.

On paper, you should also have a Regular and an Italic, and these parameters:

Italic:

  • Style Name as STAT entry: ital

Regular:

  • Elidable STAT Axis Value Name: ital
  • Style Name as STAT entry: wght

ExtraLight, Light, Medium, Bold, Black:

  • Style Name as STAT entry: wght

But I could not get it to work in AI yet either.
