Hey, Im using Glyphs for years now and I really love it in general. but I would propose a subscription model or some sort of, so the developer can afford to provide a better software. It’s really tiresome to have to deal all the time with the bugs. Plugins are not working, this is not working, and that is not working. I’m scared to make updates because something may stop working. I’m mean I’m willing to pay premium if the whole thing would work more reliably.
Funny to read because I think Glyphs for years has been among the best apps to use — great customer support, thought through and well maintained, easily customizable.
Which doesn’t seem to help Adobe to fix simple bugs for decades, despite quadrillions of users and big teams.
If you are talking about today’s update Glyphs 3.5 (3500), I already reported about an issue when plugins can’t identify the active tool.
Also, when something like that happens and your work has stopped, you can re-download the previous application version (or any other version you like) from the official website, just like I did this morning. Or, you can even keep a few versions of the application, like stable version and cutting edge version, so you always have a fallback if something goes wrong.
I understand the point. Glyphs is well known for its move-fast-and-break-stuff approach. Stuff breaks all the time and that annoys not only font engineers relying on Glyphs for production.
In all fairness, this concerns the cutting-edge versions, which are explicitly marked as such and do not claim stable performance in all aspects. There’s a reason people stick to stable versions for production.
However, the simple idea of throwing money at the app won’t work as simply as that. I trust the Glyphs team has thought about the pricing question a lot, and have figured out the model that works best for them.
So, while I understand the frustration expressed in the initial post, I would point out that this can’t be justified when talking about cutting-edge versions. Stick to stable releases. Glyphs’ approach enables innovation and feature expansion in many directions, and it might take some time before a majority of these are properly developed. I’m very happy with that choice.
There are other font editors out there with a completely different approach, a much heftier price tag, far less frequent releases, but a more reliable performance in the more limited functionalities they offer. Your choice.
After using (and fighting with) Adobe programs for many years, I was shocked at how fast and transparently the Glyphs team patched things. Being able to communicate directly with the devs is such a blessing.
I honestly don’t understand the initial post’s complaint. The Glyphs software is the most reliable graphic software in my experience. It enables you to produce technically professional level fonts even for people that don’t have that level of experience. The stable versions should suffice for any standard production workflow. And if you want the cutting edge stuff, you have to be prepared for small bumps here and there. But even when you get stuck sometimes, Georg and Rainer are so quick to help that it is incredible! So again, the complains really seem unreasonable to me.
What the hell!? I don’t even get it. I would HATE a subscription model!!! ! !
These guys are doing great, and I applaud their efforts. There is no more responsive team on the planet than they are. Yang, You are out of your freakin mind!
I have been always telling people how much I love Glyphs App, especially how helpful and responsive the devs are. And how people in the forums are so supportive too. Most importantly, I love that it’s not a subscription based service, it’s great, and I hope it continues this way.
