I’ve noticed that the built-in “Japanese Educational Kanji” (Japanese elementary school kanji) list in Glyphs appears to be based on the old standard from before 2020.
The official list was revised by the Japanese Ministry of Education, and a new version has been fully implemented in schools since April 2020.
The key changes are:
- The total number of characters increased from 1006 to 1026.
- 20 new kanji were added.
- Some kanji were moved between different school grades.
The absence of these 20 characters is a significant issue, as it means any font checked against the current list will be incomplete for the official Japanese educational standard.
To help resolve this, I have already prepared a corrected .plist file with the updated lists. I would be happy to provide it to make the update process as easy as possible.
Updating this would be a great help to all font designers working on Japanese fonts.
Thank you for your fantastic work on Glyphs.
