Variable font with some masters but several options for the components?

The following Chellenge: I would like to create a variable font. The font has two weights (light and heavy) and two widths (condensed and expanded). This results in 4 master units. At the same time, I would like to have additional options for the serif height and serif width (the serifs are created as components). How can I create this as smartly as possible without having an extremely large number of layer copies in the end?

You don’t need to put masters at all corners of the design space. You might be able to just add in master with thicker serifs and the same ‘thickening’ is applied to all other design space positions.
