Vertical spacing gap and width

I’m designing some vertical punctuation marks for a CJK font, and I’ve noticed a visible gap between two glyphs when they are vertically set. Since I’m working on a Glyphs file that someone else created, I couldn’t figure out what’s causing this issue — and the original designer isn’t sure either.

Could anyone explain how this gap occurs and how to fix it?

Also, all the vertical CJK punctuation I added have a default value of 825, but I’d like them to be 1000. I know how to change the value manually, but I’d like to know how to set 1000 as the default.

Thank you!

I cannot reproduce this. Can you send me the file? Just one glyph will do.

For horizontal type setting, there is a Default Layer Width custom parameter, but I believe it has no effect on glyph heights for vertical type setting.

Hi Rainer! Thank you for your reply. I’ve sent you the file in a message earlier, but I’m not sure if you’ve seen it. Anyway I found that it the issue was caused by the typoAscender (810) not being set to the Ascender Han (880), and it’s now fixed.

And the default vertical height (825) is equal to Ascender (660) minus Descender (-165). It would be better if the default value is related to matrix of scripts which are intended to be used for vertical layout, because they usually don’t have ascender or descender. Or perhaps this default value is used somewhere else that I’m not aware of? If so, please let me know.
